Information regarding ATO scams.
Recently there have been reports of people some our clients being contacted by scammers impersonating the ATO. We feel it necessary to clarify any confusion that may have arrived from these and make all of our clients aware of the most prevalent of these to help protect you from them.
A common scam recently has been a voice message left on the victims phone with the name Kevin Short, Shaw or Shorten, stating they are from the ATO calling in regards to either fraudulent activity conducted by the person which may result in fines of $5000 or more and audits of tax returns. They leave a number of 02 8015 2967 or 02 8005 7523. (these names and numbers may change)
Another scam is that an Andrew Watson rings and says he is from the Criminal Investigations Department of the ATO and advising the person that they have defrauded the ATO and they are currently under investigation and will be audited for the last 10 years. This caller supplied a badge number of B-S4982 and employee code of 0693. (these may also change as the scam advances)
Kevin Shorten has also been known to call and state that the person was to be refunded monies as they had paid excess of GST. Telling the client he was calling from The Australian Federal Government – reclaim department and they were to be refunded $5248.00. (again names and amounts may vary)
If you do receive a phone call, we advise you not to confirm or give any information to these people and if you are in any doubt to call the National ATO hotline at 13 28 61. The ATO will very rarely ring the you direct and give a standard number such 02 8……. with all contact coming through us first.
If you have had any questions or concerns you can contact us, or the ATO directly.
